African Dinner in Cayman Islands

The African Expat Network in Cayman Islands held its first formal dinner event in Grand Cayman on 30 October 2010. Although the number of Africans on island are very limited compared to say, North Americans, Asians, Europeans or South Americans the turnout was pretty good and we had Africans from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana attending the event. Some couples even brought their newly born kids to grace the event.

The special guest for the evening was Father Boniface, a Nigerian Roman Catholic priest who looks after the Mandeville parish in Jamaica. Food was catered by Myrtles, a popular local restaurant here in Cayman Islands well known for it’s exquisite local Caribbean dishes. The music was provided by two DJ’s very well versed in African music, one from Kenya and the other from Zimbabwe. There was more than enough to drink at the event and once the dinner was done, virtually everyone showed off their dancing skills on the dance floor.

It was really great to see Africans from different countries enjoying such fellowship far from home and sharing their experiences both on and off island. There were great prizes for the best African dress, the first couple on time etc. All in all, a great time was had by all and maybe the next dinner will be in New York, London or some other such place.
